never have i ever 🫣

Hi Reader, Have you heard of the game "never have I ever?" ❓Have you ever got a tattoo? ❓Have you ever shared someone's toothbrush? Questions like that. I enjoy watching videos of folks sharing their stories and usually commenting on their experiences. We don't have to go to those extremes, but sharing your story can be a powerful tool in your R.I.C.H. life journey. I'm not asking you to write your memoir (but feel free if you want to). What is important is to know: What drives you? Why do...

😨 You should be poor at the end of the month. 🫤

Hi Reader, And yes, I’m serious. Not the advice you were expecting from a money mindset and YNAB coach. I promise I’ll explain. But let me backtrack for a minute aka hear me out. In YNAB, our primary focus is to give every dollar a job. The easiest way to explain is to show you. Here are some of my categories: Monthly Spending Mortgage Groceries Gas Take out Sinking Funds Car maintenance Christmas Birthday trip Ideally I’m assigning money in each category every month. In the first three...

🥞 Pancakes + George Michael 🎤🕺

Hi Reader, I made breakfast for dinner last night. I was not feeling particularly motivated to make anything, and I’ve been craving pancakes. I actually had been craving going to a diner. But I make good pancakes. So why go to a diner? Or order pancakes for take out? There is nothing wrong with takeout. I usually get something once a week. But what I was thinking about was ordering things that I’m less inclined to make at home. It’s all about tradeoffs. I was then watching a YouTube video by...

When the wind blows things away 🍃

Hi Reader, We had no warning about a freak wild storm the other night. The wind got so bad; it blew my garbage and recycling bins into my neighbor's front yard. I had to go out in the storm to recover them. My recycling bin's cover was broken. After the initial shock, and drying off, I thought, well crap, now I have to call the company for a replacement. And you know what? I was so grateful I had money in my rainy day category, just in case I'm charged for it. (Hopefully not, but you never...

🤭 I'm not doing what I was told and Happy St. Patrick's Day 🍀

Hi Reader, Happy St. Patrick's Day! I saw this funny cartoon, and it reminded me of when I decided to change where I track my emergency funds. I stopped tracking my emergency funds in my budget. YNAB likes things simple in that you can add your emergency funds to your budget. But I've learned that doesn't work for me. It was too tempting to move money that was supposed to be for emergencies into my budget for non-emergencies. So now I keep my e-funds where I can't see them on a regular basis....

⏳ Here we go again...

Hi Reader, Spring has sprung. Well, at least as far as time goes. We sprung ahead this past weekend. I know many folks like that the daylight has changed for the better. But I just don’t like losing an hour of sleep. So I’ll be a bit grumpy this week. I'll get over it. Speaking of time, they say timing is everything. I don’t know who “they” is but it seems to be true most of the time. For example, my friend and I decided to postpone our workshop series until May. So stay tuned for updated...

Now, now, now!!! 😭😠

Hi Reader, A couple of weeks ago, I talked about ahimsa or non-harming. The other end of that is helping. How do you help others? More importantly, how do you help yourself? Within the R.I.C.H. Life Framework, we emphasize intentional choices, which are excellent ways to help ourselves. We make choices all the time. But we may not make choices with awareness. I am prone to impulsiveness. Anxiety is a big culprit. I get anxious; I want to feel in control of something, and I decide to act (or...

Did you know…🤔

Hi Reader, I used to teach gentle, restorative Yoga classes to adults. When I moved back to NYC in 2008 for a new job and home, I decided to let go of teaching. I realized that NYC was saturated with Yoga teachers, and I decided to focus on different interests. But Yoga is still a part of my life. I was trained in the traditional teachings of Yoga in which the poses, also called asana, are one piece, or limb, of Yoga practice. The ultimate goal of Yoga is to yoke, or join together. All eight...

Letting go and finding hope ❤️‍🩹

Hi Reader, I took my time to settle on my intention for the year. I decided on letting go. I’m working to let go of things in my home, aka the sometimes dreaded word declutter. But I’m also letting go of what doesn’t serve me in this season of my life. I’ve more or less recovered from Covid that lingered for another week. Now, I feel like real life is settling in. It’s been hard not to feel devastated regarding the news lately. Well, the news hasn’t been great for awhile, but recent events...

Don’t 🔪 me, but I can't stand “no-spend” months.

Hi Reader, "No-spend" challenges are everywhere online. No-spend months, for the uninitiated, are usually framed as a challenge to restrict spending to essentials. That means no take out and no extra spending on “frivolous” things. I give credit to those who at least call the challenges "low-spend months,” since that is a bit more accurate. No-spend months set you up for failure. For one thing, you're flat out lying to yourself. Unless you are an extreme minimalist, you're spending money. So...
